ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the importance, for any research project, of reviewing previous research and being aware of existing writing the literature on a topic. It presents general sources of information on sport studies literature, sets out the mechanics of compiling bibliographies and recording bibliographical references, and considers the process of reviewing the literature for research purposes. The aim of research of an academic nature is to add to the body of human knowledge. In most societies that body of knowledge is generally in written form the literature. The chapter examines the mechanics of searching for relevant literature including library catalogues, published bibliographies and indexes and electronic sources. It addresses the sorts of questions which should be asked when conducting such a review for research purposes. The chapter reviews the process of referencing the literature, and explores the characteristics and advantages and disadvantages of the author/date or 'Harvard' system and the footnote or endnote system.
