ABSTRACT

The relationship is core to the success of any helping process such as consultation, although E. H. Schein suggests that there is still much to be learned about the nature of that relationship. Trust is needed for the client to reveal what is the real problem, to be able to accept what is offered, and to implement whatever resolution might come out of the conversation with the helper. Nor is consultation a therapeutic relationship. Personal issues of the consultee are not the focus—the work of the consultee is. When personal issues arise in the process, it is best to acknowledge and move on, or to help the consultee receive an appropriate referral. Trust Given the critical need to save face in any helping relationship, both by the consultant and the consultee, there must be a sense of trust between them.
