ABSTRACT

Design studios should have three main roles: leader, sketcher, and historian. Participants in the design studio undertake a heroic mission. They actively want to solve a problem or create a new opportunity for the betterment of customers. The leader must have very strong facilitation skills. They must be able to actively listen, handle strong egos, adjust tactics, schedule activities, and so on. A cross-functional team of experts is assembled to get different perspectives in the design studio. The composition of the cross-functional team greatly increases the creative and critical thinking in the design studios. The advantages of the cross-functional team include diversity, cohesion, synergy, and consensus. The challenges in managing and working with different people are: competing interests, hidden agendas, conflict, and difficult egos. This chapter concludes that the leader must be able to manage the challenges of dealing with different people.
