ABSTRACT

The B2 Brooklyn New York (BKLYN) residential tower is part of Atlantic Yards, a 22-acre development comprising 14 buildings in heart of Brooklyn by one of New York City's most prominent developers, Forest City Ratner Companies (FCRC), a subsidiary of Forest City Ratner Enterprises. Although multiple experts worked together on the design of B2 BKLYN, the case study focuses on the collaboration of Arup, SHoP Architects and SC. B2 BKLYN has received worldwide recognition for innovations in prefabrication, the towers were originally designed to be conventionally constructed. Construction on B2 BKLYN began in December 2012 and each additional building that is part of the multi-use complex, including two more residential towers, is scheduled to start construction in sequential nine-month intervals. The initial feasibility study by Arup determined that B2 BKLYN should all be steel structure. The goal to condense the on-site construction led to a number of creative solutions that helped to refine the design work.
