ABSTRACT

Cyborg is a term to describe how people are becoming increasingly linked to gadgets and technology. In The Postmodern Condition: A Report on Knowledge, the French philosopher Jean-Francois Lyotard announces the emergence of postmodernism. Cyberpunk was fascinated with the relationship between man and primarily though not exclusively computer technology. As Lyotard lists how people have become postmodern, so one might itemise the way they have transformed into cyborgs. The term ‘android’ began to gain use in science fiction in the 1940s. Android means ‘man-like’ and was originally used to describe automata. Robots are made out of non-organic materials; in other words, they are machine-driven. The cyborg concerns a human having technological enhancements. One of the best known representations of the physical cyborg is from the television series The Six Million Dollar Man. The cyborg offers a startling new moment for the evolution of mankind which has been termed in some quarters as ‘posthuman’.
