ABSTRACT

An email comes to me from the Federal Secretariat in Lagos, Nigeria, confiding in author that a Dr Akin Adesola and his colleagues wish to divert some funds to an account which he asks me to set up for them in his own country. Genre guides interpretation because it is a constraint on semiosis, the production of meaning. In doing so the par textual apparatus works as a frame. The cues given to the reader here are those of the poem's dream logic of ontological transformation and, in particular. Its ultimate reversal in the bleak finality of the last line. The author concludes this chapter with an extended reading of a text Goethe's 1809 novel Die Wahlverwandtschaften. Usually translated into English as Elective Affinities which does include such a reflexive generic model within it. But which actually works out a more complicated relationship with the genres it performs.
