ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a brief overview of the role race has played and continues to play in how teachers conceive of their positions as teachers. It addresses the importance of teacher's caring relationships with mixed-race students and their families, along with barriers that interfere with this process. The chapter presents overview on ways in which race was inserted into and many ways shaped the goals of teacher practice as a framework for discussing interactions between monoracial White and Black teachers and mixed-race youth. In fact, based on an analysis of multicultural education courses taught in teacher preparation programs across the nation, concluded that the focus appeared to be on skills and cultural awareness as a means for preparing future teachers to work with diverse student populations. Even with narrow-minded views of race-related diversity, some teachers are able to create classrooms that exude warmth and caring, regardless of negative and stereotypical views they may have about their student's families.
