ABSTRACT

Strictly defi ned, a line is a path traced by a moving point. A point is the smallest mark you can make on a surface with a tool or

implement. When you place your pencil on a piece of paper and

then move the point along the surface, you create a line. A point

is said to have no dimension. It has neither height nor width. Line

creates the fi rst dimension: length. Although line is considered

to have only one dimension, in terms of artistic expression, line

possesses many additional qualities that can be exploited by the

artist for visual effect. There are a number of ways to alter line

beyond its length in order to communicate emotion or ideas. Line

is in fact, one of the most expressive and versatile design elements

because of the amount of variety that be created by using it.
