ABSTRACT
Shapes that are characterized by curved lines are called
curvilinear . Their edges are smooth and fl owing, gently guiding the viewer’s eye around the object. They have a more natural
feel and fl avor. In contrast, shapes dominated by right angles
and planes are called rectilinear . These shapes have hard, precise edges that lend a sharp, ordered feeling to a composition.
They appear to be more structured, artifi cial, or manmade.
