ABSTRACT

In the previous chapters, we discussed the elements of design ,

along with the need for a vocabulary that allows us to explore,

work with, and talk about the foundational visual components

that are inherent in all visual art. Without this vocabulary, and

an understanding of the elements of design, it can be challenging

to create and evaluate artwork of various kinds in an effective

and compelling manner. The elements of design are the building

blocks of art. They are the basic components and materials the

artist works with. You can think of them as the wood, paint,

paper, and other supplies that are at the artist’s disposal when

creating a work of art. The principles of design are the tools

that the artist uses to manipulate these materials. They are the

hammers, saws, paintbrushes, and rulers with which a designer

shapes the elements into an evocative form. In the following

chapters, we will examine the principles of design, and how they

are used to shape the elements to create a design.
