ABSTRACT

Projections are a rapidly developing design area in theatre that

includes fi lm, video, slide shows, static and moving computer

images, multimedia, and live video that is created or tailored

specifi cally for each production. Projection elements are

presented and integrated into the living environment of the

performance and, like any other design element, are used

to support the world of the play, the action onstage, and

to assist in good storytelling. They can be used to heighten

emotional moments in the action, underscore thematic content,

reinforce key points in the action, impart information, create

special effects, and can also create the impression of a three-

dimensional space, serving as scenery. Live images of actors can

be projected from other locations to interact with the actors

onstage. It is an exciting new aspect of stage design.
