ABSTRACT
There is a currently massive emphasis on quality in all its aspects, in both manufacturing and service industries. Not only the quality of the finished product, but also the quality of the processes which result in the product, is under consideration. Arguably, the shipbuilding business, whose products operate in an inherently dangerous environment, has always emphasised product quality. The development of classification societies in response to insurance and safety needs is evidence of this.
