ABSTRACT

It is the essential anonymity of Argive politics that makes it impossible to understand the reasons that lie behind these changes. The warning was amply demonstrated by his relentless siege of Thebes, and the ruthless destruction of that city after he had captured it. The next serious upheaval came when Alexander was miles away, fighting in the heart of the Persian Empire from which, despite his initial success, many Greeks must have considered it unlikely he would return successful. Argos may have been involved, but we have no direct knowledge of this and it is unlikely that the Argives would have joined a rebellion led by Sparta. It did not attempt to enter the city, but waited instead on the hills 'overlooking the plain'. We hear next of Argos at the middle of the century. Even so, by diplomatic means he was able to detach Kleonai from Argos, and bring it into the Achaean league.
