ABSTRACT

There are a number of reasons why the ability to adequately balance work and family (life) demands (i.e. work–life balance) is an increasingly pertinent issue both for many workers and for employers. For workers regularly employed on shift-work schedules, work–life balance is often especially difficult to achieve, although as we shall see in this chapter, shift-work can also be the solution for achieving work–life balance for some employees. In this chapter we describe the key reasons why work–life balance is of increasing concern for criminal justice workplaces. We also examine some innovative practices which some criminal justice workplaces have adopted in an attempt to improve the work–life balance experiences for their employees.
