ABSTRACT

Workplace bullying and harassment are specific forms of aggression that cause harm and disrupt organisational processes. Workers’ compensation statistics indicate that workplace bullying and harassment are a leading cause of expensive mental health compensation claims and prolonged work absences (Safe Work Australia, 2013). The substantial economic and psychological costs arise not only from actual or vicarious exposure to bullying and harassment, but also as a result of perceived mismanagement or ignorance of such incidents by organisational leaders (Brough et al., 2009; Galanaki and Papalexandris, 2013). Despite increased awareness and legislation, bullying and harassment are still significant workplace problems and effective interventions are needed to minimise their adverse consequences and fulfil the organisation’s obligations to provide a safe work environment. Specific best-practice strategies will be discussed in this chapter, including developing effective policy and training, risk assessment, and creating positive organisational cultures.
