ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on key concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book describes the realistic models that are offered on a 'proof-of-concept' basis. It discusses a disaggregate model, and shows how house types that had been associated with lower incomes could be 'taken over' by those with higher - the 'gentrification' process. Models have been used extensively in planning, but by no means comprehensively or even 'typically'. The research models are most developed for planning purposes in retail and transport planning, though there have been some good applications with Lowry-based models. The modeller-planner can extract from the information system inputs to specify a model run, receive reports, the output of which feeds back into the information system for ongoing access and use. There are essentially three modes of use: evaluating a current situation by calculating indicators and identifying challenges, testing plans for the short run and exploring long-run scenarios.
