ABSTRACT

WHY should we need science to come butting in to our houses? Hasn't man been able without science to produce the most gracious and efficient homes? The answer is both yes and no.

lt is true that a good Queen Anne house, for instance, is as attractive a place to live in as one could wish. But when it was built most of our population was still living in squalid hovels of insanitary if picturesque cottages. Indeed, throughout all history, most human beings have been badly or inadequately housed. Science is needed to help us remedy that.
