FOll several years now, I have been anxious about the power of the housewife's shopping basket, which has inereased so mueh with modern development of transport. There was a time when food maillly eame from elose to the house; for example, cows were kept in London itself. Altematively, the housewife of those days bought fully preserved food, like salt beef.
