ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a few problems and solutions to creating a safe therapeutic relationship. The goal of developing a relationship of trust and collaboration is usually much more complicated and takes more time for clients with complex trauma than for clients with other problems. Professional conduct with an empathetic and respectful approach is important for all clients, but especially for clients with complex trauma. Different techniques and skills can be used during the stabilization phase. A therapeutic relationship is always individualized so that the therapist can adapt to the client's potential and limitations. Refugee from the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia initially agreed to all the proposals made by the therapist. The therapist designed a treatment plan: a session was dedicated to explaining posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex trauma, and another session was spent explaining testimony therapy. Medication is, however, recommended if there are comorbid disorders with complex trauma such as severe depression, heightened irritability, and sleeping disorders.
