ABSTRACT
Heritage planning is very much a real-life activity, affected by and involved with the values and concerns of the community, nation, and world. External matters do, and should, influence the process and outcomes of heritage activity. This chapter provides an overview of the most important contextual issues that affect the good practice of heritage conservation: the legal and planning infrastructure, sustainability, and ethics. Together they form a holistic framework for conservation.
