ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in this book. The book provides a new method of pattern drafting to produce historical stays and corsets spanning 1735 to 1890. Historical stays and corsets were designed and constructed to control the body and to alter its natural shape, producing a new silhouette. Flat pattern drafting will enable to create a garment that will alter the silhouette of the wearer. Each set of historical pattern instructions within the book requires some basic prior knowledge of pattern drafting, although every stage is carefully explained. These pattern instructions have been central to teaching pattern drafting to large groups of BA costume students over several years, enabling them to successfully produce individual historical stays and corsets. The feedback received from both staff and students has supported the development of the pattern instructions during this time and continues to increase understanding of the pattern drafting process.
