ABSTRACT

A satin silk brocade riding corset dated 1890 from the Costume Collection at Hereford Museum. The Museum Resource and Learning Centre, Hereford, England. It is made from cream jacquard silk with a flower sprig design. The corset is cut under the bust and high on the hip; it has fourteen panels with a steel front busk and laced back. The bottom and top edges are bound with India tape and this is then covered with a delicate cream lace with a ribbon insert. The bone channels are sewn next to the seams and are of various widths. It was originally worn by Mrs Ashmore Cornish from Bournemouth, was made by a corsetiere in Montreux and was donated to the Hereford Museum costume collection in 1944. During the second half of the 19th century women began to participate in various sports. Corsets were developed that cut under the bust providing complete arm movement for the wearer.
