ABSTRACT
The top hat or “topper” was the most popular men's hat of the Victorian era. While many top hats were made out of felted fur from the 1830s on they were also made out of silk stretched over a stiffened base of muslin or calico. The tallest top hats, also known as stovepipe hats, could have a crown of upwards of 7” tall.
