ABSTRACT
In the mid-19th century bonnets became smaller. The most fashionable shape was often referred to as a coal scuttle, because it looked very similar to the scoop that one would use to scuttle coal into the fireplace. A coal scuttle could be made of straw, fabric stretched over a wire frame, or a stiffened base, such as buckram, covered with fabric.
