ABSTRACT

In the latter part of the 19th century bonnets began to fade in popularity as the primary choice in women's headwear. At this time toques, small hats with little to no brim, became fashionable. There was a wide variety in the shape of these small hats. Many had a small brim and a tapered crown. Toques could be made of straw, blocked felt, or a stiffened base, such as buckram, covered with fabric. These hats were often highly decorated with silk flowers, ribbons, veils, feathers, and even at times entire stuffed birds.
