ABSTRACT
The bergere, also called the shepherdess or milkmaid hat, was commonly worn by women during the pastoral fashion movement of the 18th century. It is a simple lightweight style that is generally worn tilted forward to shade the eyes of the wearer. Bergeres could be made of straw, fabric stretched over a wire frame, or a stiffened base, such as buckram, covered with fabric.
