ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the changes that have occurred and are ongoing in the processes of socialization and education. It consists of three sections: the socialization of young children and adolescents, the teaching and learning in elementary and secondary schools, and the structure and functioning of higher education. Virtual field trips are another promising use of information communication technologies (ICTs) for teaching and learning. Excursions to a local museum, a factory, a college campus, or an historic site have always been a favorite school activity for children and teachers alike. The formal attachment of law and medical training to universities was intended to emphasize the historical and scientific foundations of the professions. A final observation concerning a potential negative impact on socialization is that ICTs promote short attention span activities. Social networks encourage brief communications. Virtual field trips are another promising use of ICTs for teaching and learning.
