ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The chapter tries to show that, if properly understood, gratuity is a powerful force that can make the difference in organizations. It concludes, people want to leave the final pages to further considerations on what really involves making space for gratuity and ideals in an organization. It is only by recognizing the right of citizenship to gratuity and to ideals in the social and economic life, that these environments, which are often heavy, can start to fly and make others fly. The common life, sprinkled by ideals, is more worth living and promises an authentic human flourishing but, just because of its openness to whole humanity, when economy, organizations, and civil life meet with the ideals, we must take into account more and more relational sufferings and conflicts. In traditional medieval society, the possibility of life in community was closely bound to sacrifice and tragedy.
