ABSTRACT

In this chapter the author explains how he has planned some individual lessons, a series of lessons, a term of lessons and a year of lessons based on long term planning, medium term planning in a classroom learning. Good planning is vital in all senses, long-, medium- and short-term planning. Long-term planning is all about being able to see the bigger picture in terms of progress. One should be able to see what the students are learning year on year, and how their learning will be consolidated over time. In some respects, language learning is cyclical: students will learn some of the same things over and over. Once the long-term planning is firmly in place, it makes the medium- and short-term planning a lot easier and more straightforward. Medium-term planning is what is sometimes referred to as the scheme of work. This should be provided for people as soon as one arrives in the department.
