ABSTRACT
The implementation of offshore wind farms is now spreading too many waters in Europe. The size of the turbines for offshore farms has been increasing with time in order to reduce the relative cost of the foundation and substructure. The advantage of offshore farms compared to landbased wind farms is a higher and more stable wind regime. This may give rise to about 50" higher annual production offshore than for land-based turbines of the same rated capacity. The disadvantages of offshore farms are higher investment and maintenance costs. There may be some interesting opportunities in combining offshore wind farms with wave machines at the same location. This is due to a phase shift in time between the two kinds of energy, where the waves are delayed relatively to the wind but last longer.
