ABSTRACT

Candidates for licensure should know that goalsetting can serve as a roadmap to success, highlighting small achievements and reinforcing efforts toward long-term goals. Goalsetting can improve performance, focus study efforts, enhance confidence, and identify targets for success. This chapter expands the knowledge of goalsetting, and is designed to link goalsetting with preparatory efforts for candidates for licensure in psychology. Goalsetting requires specific skills and a systematic, logical sequence of events. Refining is part of the dynamic nature of goalsetting. Specific and measurable goals can instill confidence, guide learning, and motivate development. It is important to realize that preparation for the licensure examination accommodates the micro-goal-setting procedure. Minigoals are indispensable in understanding goalsetting, because some tasks require more time for completion. Although goalsetting is not particularly complex, the task is surprising in its long-range implications. For virtually everyone in society, goalsetting can provide a foundation for development.
