ABSTRACT

Scrapbooks are used in this activity to promote self-healing, self-expression, understanding, and mastery of a hospitalization, traumatic event, or other transitional process. Scrapbooking has also long been used as a therapeutic tool in pediatric hospitals to document a child's surgery, cancer treatment, chronic illness, or recovery from trauma. Numerous psychological benefits may be gained by scrap booking. Jarboe recognizes the value of scrapbooking: Scrapbooks can have relevance in any practice setting and can relate to generational, cultural and unique health concerns. Melinda, a high school senior, was involved in a motor vehicle accident resulting in multiple fractures. Teens and young adults struggling with changes in identity during Erickson's stage of identity formation may feel especially unsettled by illness, trauma, or family transitions. Scrapbooks shared with peers in the hospital or members of support groups enhance peer interactions. The preprinted page prompts 'give permission' for the scrap booker to express negative thoughts, emotions, and questions.
