ABSTRACT

In this chapter I shall gather together some of what I have already said in an attempt to formulate a comprehensive model of psychosis in terms of a psychosomatic disorder. The brain is not normally considered in psychosomatic terms. The brain is the organ in the body that is most rich in neurones and it maintains a constant interaction between a symbol creating mental system and its biological substrate. For this reason, we will neither find one single understanding or explanation of psychosis, nor any other mental phenomena either in a biological or a psychological frame of reference. Such an understanding requires a dialectic point of view, where both systems are given their proper due. But, at the same time, we have to realize how long it will be before we gain more comprehensive knowledge.
