ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses the extent to which bullying occurs among prisoners and has highlighted problems in trying to ascertain the true extent of bullying. Different types of bullying have been presented and the importance of measuring both direct and indirect forms of bullying has been highlighted. Accounting for indirect bullying is particularly important: studies that have focused solely on direct bullying may have severely underestimated the extent to which bullying takes place by failing to acknowledge the importance of measuring indirect aggression, which may be a preferred strategy in prison. Age differences were also highlighted, with younger age groups tending to perceive higher levels of bullying and also reporting to bully in different ways to older age groups. Only one aspect of the environment was discussed here, namely the physical environment. There are other elements of the environment that are just as important such as the social environment.
