ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some insight into the range of possible reactions that victims of bullying may show, as well as providing a rationale behind these reactions. The emotional responses of the victims of bullying in a prison environment have received very little attention from researchers. K. Grant reported that the most frequently reported precautionary behaviour used to avoid bullying was 'keeping more to oneself', followed by 'avoiding certain areas of the prison'. Aggression can be an encouraged method of responding to bullying in a prison. A. Liebling and H. Krarup argued that prisoners who self-harmed could be identified less by their background and criminal justice histories and more by the descriptions that they provided of their experiences in prison. Since bullying can represent an element of the 'prison experience' it seems reasonable to expect that there may be a link between this and self-injurious behaviour.
