ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the positive and negative potential of work in the lives of Americans. Work carries the power to add meaning and to provide the basic necessities that can significantly increase the quality of individual and family life. The world of work provides one of the greatest adventures in human development. The first, women engaged in full-time work and careers, became a bright symbol of American freedom, ingenuity, and productivity. Traditionally men and women’s work patterns differ. In the past, many women modified and eventually surrendered their hopes and dreams in order to maintain family harmony. Society must be organized in such a way that man’s social loving nature is not separated from his social existences, but becomes one with it. The chapter focuses on the difficulties faced by dual-career couples, but not all single parents remarry or marry.
