ABSTRACT

Most people share a similar vision for the final days of the people they love. They imagine them living at home surrounded by their loved ones. Circumstances can transfer the power over those final days to someone else’s judgment, but when a private belief becomes a public declaration, family members can become unified. Heroism arises precisely because of imperfection, and the courage to be imperfect allows people to transform their lives and continue to brave the hazards inherent in living well. Perfectionists are only heroes of their imaginary worlds. Rudolf Dreikurs, a founder of modern parenting movements, advised his students to develop the “courage to be imperfect.” Some people become world citizens early in life. However, years of struggle and experience are necessary for most of us to become a part of the human experience.
