ABSTRACT

Adolescent suicide has received a great deal of attention in recent years. In fact, suicide among those aged 15 to 24 has been the subject of numerous magazine and newspaper articles, radio and television reports, and made-for-TV movies. The special media attention given to adolescent suicide is not a reflection of an exceptionally high rate—although the rate is high. It has resulted from a remarkable increase in the self-destructive behavior of this age group over the last half of the 20th century. The big news about adolescent suicide is that young people, who prior to the mid 1950s were relatively immune to self-destruction, have joined the adult world of suicide.
