ABSTRACT

This comprehensive treatment program for adult incest survivors provides a step-by-step structure designed to deal with the emotional, cognitive, and psychosomatic problems, as well as the interpersonal difficulties survivors face both in their families of creation and families of origin. The therapist may overly magnify the extent or effects of the abuse or inadvertently help to create painful cutoffs from the family of origin. The current zeitgeist of openness to the realities of childhood abuse leaves the practitioner vulnerable to errors that he or she may create such ceiling barriers. It is important for the practitioner working with incest survivors to guard against vulnerable to errors. The survivor needs to become conscious of the incestuous experiences and the damage caused by them, but this is only part of the healing journey. Clinicians who do not have such experience should use the approach under appropriate supervision.
