ABSTRACT

The children face equally difficult situations and sets of feelings, which they must continue to try to handle even if there is no corresponding personal satisfaction. Stepfamily couples might be more comfortable if they realized that to date the research findings are encouraging as researchers look at the long-range effects of divorce and remarriage on children. Even though one-third of the children in many classrooms are stepchildren, individual stepchildren continue to feel different and alienated. The focus of the therapy is on ways in which the adults can work together for the good of the child. The visiting children have no friends in the neighborhood and so they are “underfoot" except when they go somewhere with their father and stepmother. Adolescence is a time when children who have been living with their mother often wish to go to live with their father.
