ABSTRACT

In stepfamilies, the forming of a viable satisfying new couple unit is frequently a very difficult task. In stepfamilies there are more strains than in most intact families, and as a result the alliance or coalition between the couple seems particularly important and also more difficult to achieve and maintain. The role of the stepparent varies depending on the particular stepfamily constellation, and it seems wise for schools, churches, etc., to be aware of the need to create opportunities for stepparents to participate as they feel comfortable. Donald Lunde, a professor in the areas of both law and the family at Stanford University, expresses the opinion of many stepfamily couples when he says that family law is very antiquated as it refers to stepfamily situations. One of the unique characteristics of stepfamilies is that there have been bonds between parents and children before the present relationship between the two adults existed.
