ABSTRACT

Prospective buyers usually check the mileage gauge to estimate how likely it is that the car is mechanically worn out. The experimenter reminded the children that the aim was to prevent the second experimenter finding the treasure, pointed to the footprints leading to one of the four bins, and asked if the child could think of doing anything to obstruct the second experimenter. Children were then asked if they could think of anything else to prevent the second experimenter finding the treasure. Many children grasped the doll and walked her from the ink pad to an empty bin, thus laying spurious clues. The accumulation of findings relating to 3-year-olds is presenting a picture of inability to utilise an insight into mind that is apparent in other domains such as pretence and aptitude for making judgements about thoughts. During the experimental phase, there was a small modification to the boxes in that the previously opaque sides facing child were now transparent.
