INTRODUCTION Some interpersonal relationships retain many of their characteristics over a long period, or change only gradually. Others, having remained stable for a period, are suddenly disrupted or undergo metamorphosis. Stability of a relationship in spite of changes in the participants or external stresses could be due to compensatory interactions within the relationship. In such a case, negative feedback could be said to operate. And where slight change leads to gradually accelerating change and metamorphosis or disruption, the sequence could be described in terms of positive feedback.
