ABSTRACT
Some relationships start adventitiously. One moves to a new town, buys bread at a local shop, chats with the shopkeeper and gradually gets to know him or her better. But most research on the development of relationships has been concerned with close relationships—friends or romantic partners—where there is some degree of initial choice and successive interactions are usually actively sought for their own sake. It is with such that we are concerned in these chapters.
