ABSTRACT
Here we turn to the declining stages of a relationship, and must immediately face some terminological distinctions. Duck (1982b) has advocated the terms “dissolution” and “termination” to refer to the permanent dismemberment of a relationship, “decline” to a reduction in closeness, and “breakdown” to refer to turbulence or disorder in a relationship which may or may not lead to dissolution. These conventions are followed here.
