ABSTRACT

This chapter examins the SPE feature system described by Chomsky and Halle. It illustrates the concept of distinctive features through the set of features proposed by Noam Chomsky and Morris Halle in their book The Sound Pattern of English (SPE). This chapter assumes the formulation for major class features. It is listed here, as the noisiness of the airflow is deemed to be part of the sound source. SPE's cavity features are mainly to do with what would traditionally be termed place of articulation.
