ABSTRACT

“Go on; one more won’t make any difference.” “You deserve it; you’ve had a rough day.” Sound familiar? These are the kinds of things people say to themselves when they are trying to justify what they know in their heart is not the right course of action for their mouth—one more ice cream, beer, or cigarette. This chapter covers two major areas of overindulgence that have serious consequences for health and threaten psychological well-being: overeating and smoking. The problem of excessive alcohol consumption is too controversial and complex to deal with in a text such as this. There are numerous comprehensive treatments of the subject, and they are included in the annotated bibliography at the end of the chapter.
