ABSTRACT

An event is said to be stressful if it poses “a real or perceived threat to a person,”—that is, when they feel unable to cope or that they are not in control. Stress is, and always has been, an integral part of living, one of the basic ingredients of life. For this reason, as already explained, man has developed an adaptive coping mechanism—the “fight or flight response”—to deal with these inevitable pressures and problems. Up to a certain point, stress adds a dash of spice to life. It keeps us on our toes. It makes people perform even more efficiently on all levels—physically, behaviorally, and cognitively.
