ABSTRACT

The development of the ISBD family has been an organic process that is itself linked to developments in both publishing and librarianship. This article describes the evolution of ISBD(ER)-the International Standard Bibliographic Description for Electronic Resources, which had its beginnings in ISBD(NBM), a standard devoted to non-book materials. Although new understandings and new technologies are challenging the established roles of cataloguing, the ISBDs will continue to be important tools for the visual presentation and availability of bibliographic information.
