ABSTRACT

When Marvin entered treatment he had stopped writing and directing plays entirely; indeed, he had not written a play since he had graduated from college seven years earlier. In college he had written, directed, and acted in a number of one-act musicals for an experimental acting group he and some friends had formed, but in the intervening years he had not been able to sit down at his computer and write. I had seen many clients who had told similar stories: It’s certainly easier to produce creative work in college, when it is either required or supported by the collegial atmosphere than it is afterward, when one must be a self-starter. However, I wanted to get his take on it, so I asked him why he thought he had stopped.
